How Does NMS Work?
NMS tools don't rely on magic; they rely on protocols. The most common language devices use to talk to NMS is SNMP.
Key Technologies
- SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol): Standard way for routers/switches to report status (CPU, Temp, Traffic) to the central NMS.
- ICMP (Ping): Used to check if a device is online or offline (Reachability).
- NetFlow / sFlow: Protocols used to analyze what kind of traffic is flowing (e.g., "Is it YouTube or ERP data?").
- Syslog: Collecting event logs for auditing and troubleshooting history.
